Minister's Special Licence Information

Each year, the Government of Alberta provides Minister’s Special Licence tags for select game species to be allocated through draws to raise money for wildlife conservation and stewardship in Alberta.

  • Minister’s Special Licences are valid from August 25 to August 24 of the following year, across the province where a hunting season for the respective species occurs (all current hunting related wildlife regulations still apply).
  • A 2026 Wildlife Certificate is required to apply for a Minister Special Licence.

  • To view your draw results online sign in with your WiN or the identifier on file. Select My Account then Orders/Reprints to view your results.

Important Information

  • To apply for a Special Licence Draw every individual must purchase a Wildlife Certificate prior to applying, confirming their residency and hunter eligibility status. Including all group members and priority only applications.
    • All members of a group application must purchase their Wildlife Certificate separately confirming their residency and hunter eligibility status. A group leader can not purchase a Wildlife Certificate on behalf of group members.
    • If you are drawn, the authorization to purchase that licence cannot be cancelled. All licences and applications are Non-Refundable and Non-Transferable.
  • The definition of an Alberta Resident has changed. See definitions on page 43 of the 2025 Hunting Draws Booklet for details.

Additional Information

  • Permitted licence combinations will now allow a resident hunter to buy one undersubscribed licence of any kind even if that hunter already holds a license of that type. For example: if a hunter draws an antlerless elk special license or buys a resident antlerless elk license, they can still buy an undersubscribed antlerless elk special licence if one is available.
  • Hunter Education: First-time hunters who have not previously held a hunting licence in Alberta or elsewhere, must complete the Alberta Conservation and Hunter Education course. Visit AHEIA.com for more details on becoming eligible to hunt.
  • Do I Need a Hunter Host(s): Anyone who is a non-resident hunter must be accompanied by a licenced hunter host if hunting big game, wolf, or coyote.
